Importance of Certification

~> For Gold Certifications

Buying gold jewellery in India is the most common thing for all class of people. But, do you know if your jewellery is not hallmarked then the amount you invested in precious metal is not worth.

First, let us understand what Hallmark is?

Hallmark on gold jewellery basically indicates the purity of gold. It is a guarantee of fineness of the gold as determined by BIS. In India, Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is the accreditation agency which certifies and hallmark gold jewellery. This BIS system of hallmarking began on April, 2000. A hallmark consists of carat, stamp of BIS, year of mark and jeweller's identification mark.

A three digit number on hallmark indicates purity of gold. For example, a BIS 916 hallmark means 91.6 percent purity of gold for 22 carat gold, 750 would mean to 18 carat purity.

According to BIS standards, the fineness marks are the 958, 916, 875, 750, 585 and 375 indicating 23, 22, 21, 18, 14 and 9 carat, respectively.

BIS stamp i.e. a triangle indicates that the jewellery has been assessed. Code letter represents the year of hallmarking and is decided by BIS only. For example letter 'A' denotes year 2000 and letter 'J' denotes for 2008. The BIS hallmark also carries the jeweller's stamp to indicate that the jeweller is BIS certified.

~> For Diamond Certifications

Certified diamonds are diamonds that have been graded by a gem laboratory based on their "4 C" attributes of Cut, Color, Clarity and Carat Weight. When shopping for a diamond, it is highly recommended to purchase a certified diamond to ensure the quality of the stone.

Certified diamonds have been verified for quality, allowing consumers to purchase with confidence based on the attributes of the diamond rather than blindly trusting the sales pitch of the retailer. When armed with a grading certificate, consumers have a pretty good idea of what the diamond will look like without having to see it in person. Certified diamonds also:

  • Hold their value better than their non-certified counterparts, especially for resale and upgrading purposes

  • Simplify the comparison process, it's much easier to compare certified diamonds based on the 4 Cs than it is to rely on visual inspection alone

  • Broaden the shopping base to include online retailers, resulting in significant savings

When purchasing certified diamonds, be sure the diamond certification is from a third-party laboratory rather than one associated with the store, jeweller, or Online, who may offer a biased opinion to facilitate the sale. Also, verify that the third-party laboratory has a history of stringent grading practices and that they've been in business long enough to establish a solid reputation in the jewellery industry. Brilliance recommends the following laboratories, in order of preference: GIA, IGI, SGL, EGL, GS and GSL.

>>Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS)

Government of India' has identified BIS a sole agency in India to operate this scheme. BIS hallmarking Scheme is voluntary in nature and is operating under BIS Act, Rules and Regulations. It operates on the basis of trust and thus it is desirable that aspect of quality control are in built in the system responsible for managing quality.

The BIS Hallmarking Scheme has been aligned with International criteria on hallmarking (Vienna Convention 1972). As per this scheme, licence is granted to the jewellers by BIS under Hallmarking Scheme. The BIS certified jewellers can get their jewellery hallmarked from any of the BIS recognized Assaying and Hallmarking Centre. The recognition to an Assaying and Hallmarking Centre is given against BIS criteria Doc: HMS/RAHC/GO1 which is in line with International criteria on Marking and Control of Precious metals.

BIS also maintains market surveillance on the certified jewellers, at a defined periodicity on random basis. Market surveillance involves collection of Hallmarked Gold Jewellary from licencee's retail outlet/manufacturing premises and having it tested for conformity in BIS recognized hallmarking centre.

Deviations in degree of purity of fine metal and observance of operation not in conformance to the system may result in cancellation of BIS recognition of the centre as per provisions under the BIS act, rules and regulations.
